Microgrid Featuring Solar Array, Lithium-Ion Battery Storage, and Diesel Generators
Cat Cay, Bahamas
Cat Cay is a currently a thermal generation-based island microgrid utilizing a ground mounted 546.5kWp solar Photovoltaic array to reduce demand on the 2.5MW peak capacity diesel generation system. Power generated by the solar photovoltaic array is often able to provide the islands peak power demand during non-peak times, resulting in a significant reduction in diesel fuel consumption.
A lithium-ion battery system and additional solar photovoltaic is being added to the system to allow the diesel generation system to be placed in backup mode only. The island will then be a full solar battery microgrid resulting in additional diesel fuel reduction. At this point, the island microrgrid will run at its lowest energy cost ($/kWh).
